Just east of Crail are the remains of a World War I (1918 - 1919) and World War II airfield, now used for motor sports and car boot sales. The runways and all the major buildings are visible and have been given Scheduled Status by Historic Scotland. The displays show the life and work of the Royal Naval Air Squadron HMS Jackdaw (1939 - 1947) where torpedo training was undertaken, HMS Bruce (1947 - 1949) the boys training establishment taking boys from the age of 15, and where discipline was harsh, intermittent use by the Black Watch (1952 - 1955), the Joint Services School for Linguists (JSSL) (1956 - 1960) where Russian was learnt as a response to the 'Cold War'.
At its peak, the airfield had 2000 personnel, many of whom had happy memories of their time off duty in and around Crail. Exhibits include the lights from the operating theatre and part of a propeller retieved from the sea off Crail.
Lots of photographs and memorabilia.
