Burgh Room

Caption.
Explore the origins and development of the Burgh and its Kirk since the 12th century. As an important trading port, it was given Royal Burgh status in 1310 by Robert the Bruce, which permitted and regulated the market. The old weights and measures are displayed along with the provost's robes and Town Crier's drum. A wall hanging created in 2000 depicts some of the shops and scenes at the millennium.

The oldest part of the church dates from about 1175 and it became an important ecclesiastical centre and collegiate church (1517). John Knox preached here, 1559, before leading a march to St Andrews to ravage the cathedral - "the old order changeth giving place to new...", so began the Reformation.

Other exhibits from the burgh include christening gowns, a tablecloth embroidered with about 700 names - prbably donors to St David's Church (now the Community Hall), a collection of bottles found in a dump outside the old town and a chair made by a local craftsman.

Two beautiful quilts on display are to be raffled for funds for the Museum. Raffle tickets available in the Museum.

Lots of albums with pictures and information.
